Senior prom...

Prom79

Yeah, that's me and my date, Dan,(wonder what HE'S doing now!) I loved my dress, mauve with little flowers at the ends of the ties, spaghetti straps on the dress with a matching jacket...

Kate's prom was Saturday night and she looked beautiful...

Belt

Her dress was a short Cynthia Rowley design, no gowns or updos for her! My favorite detail was this clasp on the front...very funky, very Kate. I wonder what she'll remember about her prom in 25 years...

Spring blooms...

Foxglove2

My foxgloves, bleeding hearts, hostas, and ferns are up and safe after a bad frost about a week ago...I have a small shade garden in the very back of the yard, with a little patio, a perfect place to read a book when the weather heats up.

Bleeding_heart

These are such English looking flowers...I saw Miss Potter over the weekend, and while I'm not overly fond of quiet, feel-good movies, I was really looking forward to this one. I have been a Beatrix Potter fan ever since I was a little girl. Have you seen her botanical drawings of fungi, or her sketches of the Lake Country landscape? She was an amazingly gifted naturalist and artist as well as being an author/illustrator. And her home is definitely on my list of "places I need to visit."

For a wonderful blog featuring the English, in this case, Yorkshire, landscape and nature, visit Richard Bell's site. He is a gifted observer and recorder of his lovely surroundings. Just reading it gives me a lift!

P.S. I've been thinking that I should start to use a digital watermark or signature of some type. Does anyone have an (easy) suggestion for a tutorial for me to look at?

100 and counting

I've been putting off posting for a couple of days because this is it,post #100 and I thought I should have something really special to say or show or share. But, coming off an incredibly busy and exciting week, I realized that what is important to me are the everyday struggles and joys that are involved in trying to be an active, working artist. Everyday stuff includes:

The opening Friday was fun, lots of positive feedback from viewers. I like this shot because you can see the reflection of the KC skyline in the background that we implied in our blue silhouette.

The shadows of the birds in the late afternoon sunlight were also an added bonus, very pleased with that effect. Thanks to everyone that stopped by or emailed me, it is great to have your support!

I also managed to fit in a figure class, to be honest, it was a welcome break from the birds...

Get a babysitter...

and come see my installation, opening tomorrow night!

Before

okay, the chair isn't the art, I am NOT a minimalist! This is your "before" shot...

After

and an "after" sneak peek. Susi Lulaki and I did this for the Urban Culture Project here in KC.They convert unused buildings into temporary art galleries. Our space is 2 windows in the old Jenkins Music Building at 12th and Walnut, titled Birds of a Feather. Opening reception is tomorrow, April 20th from 6-9 pm at the Paragraph gallery around the corner at 23 E. 12th. Stop by and say "hi." If you need directions, email me...I promise to answer, (can I just say how crazy-busy things have been here lately? Trip to see college in California, making all these #@** birds, work, and then installing everything! Totally worth it!)

En garde

Peeps

With some risk to my family's health, this Easter we once again huddled around the microwave for our annual Peep Wars. I've discovered this to be just the thing to get everyone up from the table and coerce them into the kitchen for help cleaning between grudge matches.

Due to poor record keeping I can't declare a definitive winner, but fun was had by all.

(If you've never had a Peep war, sorry, you're really missing out, these little things blow up to the size of tennis balls!)

Flora

Birdofparadise

I believe I promised more photos from Florida...and I always try and keep my promises. For the past couple of years I've been shooting digital only, using a Casio 7.2 mp camera that I've been very happy with. I just received a Nikon D80 which is an absolutely amazing camera. There's a lot for me to learn as far as all the bells and whistles, but even these very basic photos were successful for me. I probably spend more time composing a shot than I need to, but I would really rather not have to fuss in Photoshop. I guess I need to get myself on Flickr and join some groups that will help me out.

300+ photos

That's how many pictures I took over break, so it's round two with probably more to come tomorrow. Since I didn't blog at all when I was gone I have all this STUFF I feel the need to share...I'm not really comfortable with writing, I'm always the person that will moan out loud if asked to keep a journal, and I'm realizing that I just communicate better visually.
So here's shelling at Cayo Costa, a beautiful, and on our visit, virtually deserted barrier island. Shelling is hit or miss, you never know what you'll find. The shells du jour were an assortment of olive shells, enough to make several shell mirrors next visit!

Spring break might be my favorite time of year...I'm on an island, no cars, if the phone rings I know it's not for me, I don't even check my email. Pure relaxation with my family...
